A fire detection system is a key element of a facility’s fire safety and security. Fire alarms are designed to detect smoke, heat, or flames and alert the occupants of the building to evacuate. Early detection is critical in reducing the risk of people injury and property damage.
A modern fire detection and alarm system (hereafter – fire alarm or FDAS) can be quite complex. It includes various electronic devices and technical means that work together to detect a fire, notify people of an emergency, form and transmit commands to turn on automatic fire extinguishing units and smoke protection units, and other fire protection devices.
The main functions of the fire alarm system
A facility’s fire alarm system has four primary functions:
- Detection.
- Notification.
- Monitoring.
- Controlling.
1) A fire alarm monitors around the clock and detects a fire through initiation devices. There are many types of automatic initiation devices:
- smoke detectors
- heat detectors
- flame detectors
- combustion gas detectors
- air aspirating detectors
Two first types of initiation devices in the list above are most often used. A smoke detector is a device that initiates an alarm signal when it senses smoke particles. A heat detector is equipped with a sensor (thermistor) and detects a fire based on the development of heat.
While smoke or heat may take a few minutes to reach a sensor, a manual call point can be used in case an occupant notices a fire before the system is activated.
2) A notification appliance may use audible, visible, or other stimuli to alert the occupants of a fire or other emergency condition.The most common notification devices installed today are strobes, horn strobes, speakers and speaker strobes.
3) A FDAS also monitors itself, identifying the location and origin of the alarms and sensing problems with connections and wiring.
4) A fire alarm system includes control modules that ensure communication and operation between the control panel and external systems. It acts as an intermediary, triggering actions like shutting down HVAC systems, activating fire suppression systems, or managing elevator controls during an emergency.
Types of fire alarm systems
Determining the appropriate fire alarm system for a building depends on various factors, including the size and layout of the building, the potential fire hazards present, local regulations and codes, and the specific requirements of the occupants.
For small facilities, it is advisable to install non-addressable fire alarm systems. In such a system, fire detectors are connected in a loop that controls one zone. If at least one of the detectors is triggered, a general alarm signal is generated for the entire zone; the exact location of the fire is not determined.
Addressable fire alarm systems are required for medium and large industrial, administrative and public buildings. In the address fire alarm system, each fire detector has an address in the loop, and there is an information exchange protocol between the detectors and the control panel. In case of activation of one of the detectors, an alarm signal is sent to the control panel with the loop number and the address of the detector in it. Thus, in addressable fire alarm systems, control signals for firefighting systems are generated, taking into account the alarm signal output address, i.e., the exact location of the detected fire.
For complex and very large buildings, the most complete and accurate fire safety control measures can be carried out by address-analog fire alarm systems. In such systems, built-in controllers evaluate environmental parameters and their changes, the control panel receives information about the system’s component operation. The system makes a decision based on the analysis of aggregate information from the network of all devices. Modern address-analog FDASs can adapt to changing conditions in monitored areas and have high accuracy and speed of detecting fires.
